Agora Film Essay - 825 Words

Agora (Essay Sample) Content: Name: Tutor: Course: Date: Agora Agora is a film set on the ancient Christian times. The film was directed by Alejandro and written by Mateo Gil with the assistance from the producer (Mayer, 2010). Now in reference to the event, various individuals resulting in different influences have assumed different interpretations. In fact, this particular piece is a perfect example of the ways in which historical change can be applied on particular events to alter the ancient data with varying reasons in mind. However, by referring to the common tale on the event, we understand the following events to have taken center-stage in the execution of the main flow of the plot of the story. The event of Agora that took place in March 415 remains a significant occurrence among the historical events of many Christians. Its significance is associated with the murdering of powerful philosopher known as Hypatia. The murder takes a centre stage in the history of Christians as the event took place around 24 years after Christians attacked a pagan temple, dedicated to the god known as Serapis. The place was commonly referred to as Serapeum and was spiritually accorded as a place of significant traditional symbolism as it was the same place that individuals dedicated their sacrifices to their god. However, it is important to note that the events surrounding the death of Hypatia and the extent to which the Christian bishop of Alexandria was involved remains a controversial issue that has evoked different reactions from a variety of individuals (Mayer, 2010). From the storyline, the audience can understand that circumstances around the murder of Hypatia are as a result of the attack of Christians on the pagan temple. Nonetheless, keenly following the story would depict a different story emerging that refers to the killing as a symbol of an end to an era. The Use of Literary Devices to Create Humor in Romeo and Juliet - Literature Essay Samples

In dark and dire situations, humor is often needed to lighten the atmosphere in order to ensure sanity. This proves to be very true in William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Romeo and Juliet. As the plot of the play continues to develop, tragic and unnecessary deaths start to occur one by one, leading to a strenuous atmosphere being created. This results in a bitter, depressing taste being left in the audience’s mouth. The use of comedic characters and their witty plays on various literary devices, helps to relieve the tension that is created throughout the story, and makes the play more enjoyable, rather than somber. In Romeo and Juliet, humor is effectively created through diverse literary devices, and plays a large role in creating comic relief and characterizing important comedic characters. Shakespeare effectively uses literary devices in a humorous fashion, to create comedic relief during scenes with overshadowing, dark and depressing content. A prevailing device to create humor in this play is the pun, and is often used by comedic characters to lighten the dark atmosphere of a scene. An example of this is when Romeo is on his way to the Capulets’ party, accompanied by Benvolio and Mercutio, â€Å"And we mean well in going to this masque, But ‘tis no wit to go. Why, may one ask? I dreamt a dream tonight. And so did I. Well, what was yours? That dreamers often lie† (1. 4. 49-55). Here, Romeo is seen sulking over his unrequited love for Rosaline, and is dreading the fact that he is being forced into attending the Capulets’ party. This results in a gloomy atmosphere being created, but then Mercutio makes a pun on the word â€Å"lie†, implying that not only do dreamers lie down, but lie about their dreams as well, therefore creating comic relief. Another literary device that is effectively used to establish comedic relief is anaphora. When Juliet takes the potion on the day of her wedding, her family is utterly devastated at the thought of her being dead. However, the musicians that were hired could not care less about her, and then proceed to carry out a silly dispute with Peter, â€Å"Why ‘silver sound?’ Why ‘music with her silver sound?’ What say you, Simon Catling? Marry, sir, because hath a sweet sound. Prates! What say you, Hugh Rebeck? I say ‘silver sound’ because musicians sound for silver. Prates too! What say you, James Soundpost? Faith, I know not what to say† (4. 5. 125-131). Here, Peter is questioning the meaning of â€Å"silver sound†, by asking each musician what they think of the phrase. He repeats the line â€Å"What say you† multiple times, but ends up dissatisfied with each answer. This creates comedic relief, as it is humorous to see Pete r become so worked up over something as insignificant as a song lyric. This helps to brighten the mournful mood of the scene. Therefore, comedic relief is effectively achieved through the use of various literary devices. Many literary devices used in Romeo and Juliet create humor, and help to further characterize important comedic characters of the play. One of the principal comedic characters in this play is Mercutio, who acts as a foil to Romeo. Romeo sees love as a more serious and emotional matter, compared to Mercutio’s purely physical views of love. His careless views of love are proven when he is talking to Romeo about Rosaline, â€Å"Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, Too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn. If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down† (1. 4. 25-28). Here, Mercutio makes a pun on the word â€Å"prick†, and turns Romeo’s sentimental words into sexual wordplay. This not only indirectly characterizes Mercutio as an amusing and trivial person, but also as a quite intelligent one, as he is able to cleverly retort Romeo’s sulking. Another extremely important character in Romeo and Juliet is the Nurse, as she acts as a messenger for Romeo and Juliet. Her character is a very comic one as well, and she potently uses literary devices to express her thoughts that are, more often than not, very comical and lighthearted. An example of this is when the Nurse returns to tell Juliet of Romeo’s plan of marriage, â€Å"What says he of our marriage? What of that? Lord, how my head aches! What a head have I! It beats as it would fall in twenty pieces. My back, o’t’ other side. Ah, my back, my back!† (2. 5. 45-48). As Juliet is waiting in anticipation to hear of what Romeo has to say, the Nurse decides to tease her by using hyperbole to complain about her aches and pains, therefore delaying the delivery of Romeo’s message, and leaves Juliet frustrated. This not only shows that the Nurse is a playful and comic character, but it proves to the audience how close of a relationship she and Juliet have, almost as if they were bound by blood. Th erefore, comic effects created by literary devices help to develop important comedic characters of the play. Romeo and Juliet uses its tragic nature to its advantage, using various literary devices to create humor, which adds important elements, such as comic relief and character development, to the story. Shakespeare effectively uses comic relief to relieve built-up tension in the atmosphere of the play, and skillfully incorporates literary devices to express these humorous moments. Furthermore, the humor that is created through literary devices, contributes highly to the characterization and development of many significant characters. In Romeo and Juliet, humor allows the fun and lighthearted side of the play to show. After all, why so serious?

Organizational Behavior ( Ob ) - 1426 Words

Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of how people interact within groups and can be used to achieve a covenant relationship within organizations similar to the relationship that God has with His people. Personalities have a significant role in OB and personality tests create value by allowing organizations to determine ahead of time where potential conflict may arise between employees. The Jung Typology Test classifies people into one of the sixteen personality types determined by Isabel Briggs Myers and one of the four temperaments defined by David Keirsey. This discussion examines the effect of my ISTJ personality type and SJ temperament on myself and those around me on a personal and professional level. The analysis covers the strengths, weaknesses, and sources of conflict associated with each individual aspect of the ISTJ personality—introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging—as well as assessing the personality type as a whole. Lastly, the discussion conclud es with lessons I have learned regarding the use of OB in workplace improvement efforts, as well as specific areas where I can use OB to enhance my performance as an employee, co-worker, and manager. Collectivism and Individualism in The Fountainhead free essay sample

Ayn Rand’s controversial novel The Fountainhead thematically addresses the concepts of collectivism and individualism. The characters in the novel are dramatic representations of Rand’s philosophy related to these two beliefs; however, unless the reader fully comprehends the differences between these two philosophical concepts, the actions of the characters lose their significance. While both concepts are philosophical belief systems for guiding behavior, the reader will define the terms by examining their differences. The reader may understand the terms initially by examining the differences in the literal and interpretive definitions of each term. The literal definitions reveal significant differences in meaning. Merriam Websters dictionary states that individualism is, â€Å"a theory maintaining the political and economic independence of the individual and stressing individual initiative, action, and interests.†(Merriam Webster). According to this same dictionary, collectivism is defined as being â€Å"a political or economic theory advocating collective control especially over production and distribution. We will write a custom essay sample on Collectivism and Individualism in The Fountainhead or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page †(Merriam Webster). These definitions only show the political aspect of the book, however the novel is further based on one’s mind and soul. The interpretive definitions highlight compelling differences between these two beliefs. Throughout the novel the individualist is one who saw nothing wrong with his beliefs and did not think that anyone was inferior to him. Despite the reaction of others in the beginning of this novel thinking that he cared for no one but himself, by the closing people were able to see that he was â€Å"[. . .] a man totally innocent of fear† (678). On the other hand collectivism is defined as people being influenced by the whole to become a â€Å"socially accepted† person. Only changing and conforming to fit in and feel as if they fit in. The reader may solidify his understanding of the two belief systems by examining the differing effects each produces. The effects of collectivism on the individual and society clearly define the philosophy. Collectivism depicted in the novel is shown by stating that the mass works together for a greater cause and to become equal. This collectivism causes â€Å" A world where no man [. . . ] hold[s] a desire for himself, but [. . .] satisf[ies] the desire of his neighbor†(639). The effects of individualism elucidate the meaning of this belief system. Ayn Rand illustrates individualism as being a person who achieves their goals, despite the draw backs that are forced upon them and â€Å"[. . .] its glory began with one [person] and that one paid for his courage†(679). The Foutainhead presents the concept that the individualist always had to struggle throughout history and although some paid with their life,†[. . .] they won†(679). And although the works of th ese great people are outstanding, collectivist believe that no one should be made responsible and no one person should be rewarded for these consummations. What they infer is that every idea is the reproduction of someone elses concluding that no one idea is one of greatness. The differences in the meaning of these two terms are evident throughout the novel, both create an equal balance to inform the reader of what the underlying issues are. Before I read this book I believed that individualism was the act of selfishness and that collectivism was the art of people joining together to become better. However through careful reading and in class discussions I feel that individualism is no more than a person going after what they think to be right and help create an end product for the people, which is very unselfish. And I also believe that collectivism is a sort of brainwash solution that gives no credit to those who truly deserve it. Both collectivism and individualism have there downfalls. Today in my opinion no one is a true individualist, but also I see no collectivist to degree that is depicted in the novel. My opinions on these two theories have changed thoroughly throughout the novel and my final view is that, not everyone is perfect and not everyon e can be the person who they truly want to be.

Merchant of Venice, Act 1 scene 3, Act 2 scene 5 Essay Example For Students

Merchant of Venice, Act 1 scene 3, Act 2 scene 5 Essay Act 1 scene 3, introduces Shylock for the first time in The Merchant of Venice as the plays villainous Jew. Shylock is an arresting presence and although Antonio may be the character for whom the novel is named, it is Shylock who has come to dominate our focus. The first line we hear depicts a money hungry Jew: Three thousand ducats, well. As the play progresses we learn that there seems to be two dimensions to this central character. At the beginning of the scene, he and Bassanio talk about a deal. Bassanio would like to borrow money on behalf of a friend, however even though Shylock wont say no, he tantalizes Bassanio in a pretentious act, appearing as if he is actually pondering over the proposed deal. He uses words such as well to show this. This act reinforces the strong anti Semitic views in the Elizabethan era of sly money driven Jews. When Antonio arrives, Shylock, in an aside confesses his dislike for him and reveals the motive behind this passionate hatred saying: I have hate for him for he is a Christian. This is an explicit statement but he then goes further and says he hates him even more as he lend out money gratis and brings down the rate of useance with us here in Venice. Shylocks intends wholeheartedly to use this opportunity to ruin Antonio, saying If I can catch him once upon the hip. This cunning is also typical of the view of Jewish people in the 16th century and that they would use any opportunity to ruin a Christian. As he calculates the interest on Bassanios loan, Shylock remembers the many times that Antonio has called him a misbeliever, cut throat dog/ and spit upon his Jewish gaberdine. Antonio responds that he is likely to do so again, and insists that Shylock lend him the money as an enemy, such an arrangement, Antonio claims will make it easier for Shylock to exact a penalty if the loan is not repaid. Shylock questions the supposed immorality of charging interest on this loan and suggests it is no different from a farmer increasing the stock of sheep by their breeding as he quotes Jacob did in the old testament. Antonio says that The devil can cite scripture for his own purpose. In the play, Shylock is sometime referred to as the devil, which is how Jews were thought of. When Shylock tells us of how he has been called all these names we feel an emotion of sympathy for him. It is interesting to notice how Shakespeares portrayal of Shylock fluctuates between the stereotypical villainous Jew and a human person. This fluctuation encourages us to think that perhaps Shakespeare is trying to move away from the stereotypes of the people in era show us that Jews can be like normal people. When Shylock agrees to the terms he states that if he is not given his money he wants an equal pound of fair flesh. This said half jokingly and seems too extreme to be true, nevertheless, we know he is in fact not joking and he means exactly what he says because the hint we are given earlier about him wanting to catch Antonio upon the hip. Act 2 scene 5 opens with Shylock talking of his generosity towards Lancelot. He tells Jessica of his engagement to dine with Bassanio even though he doesnt really want to. It is here we see the trust that Shylock apparently has for his daughter, it is almost as if he is trying to show his confidence in her saying: Jessica, my girl, look to my house. .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .postImageUrl , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:hover , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:visited , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:active { border:0!important; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:active , .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2 .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2c28f43ca7c17b29c0669100db0e24b2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Malvolio's Identity In the play Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare EssayLancelot tells Shylock of his expected reproach this is a mistake, however Shylock is quick to notice this and gives a short sharp reply so do I his. Shylocks next little speech talks about Jessicas duty to ensure that shallow foppery does not enter his sober house. Shylock stands apart from the Christians in their foolish ways and tries to stick to his religious conventions, he believes that Christians indulge to much in worldly pleasures and as far as he is concerned he will not fall into the same trap. Lancelot comes back at Shylocks words to Jessica (in an aside) mistress look out at a window for all this. There will come a Christian by will be worth a jewes eye. Shylock hears this and immediately wants Lancelot to repeat what he has just said, but, Jessica in an effort to stop any bickering replies, His words were farewell, mistress, nothing else. Indeed, Shylock understands the Christians and their culture much better than they understand him. The closing of this scene is a testimony by Shylock of his relief that Lancelot has gone because he sleeps by day more than the wild cat, and is basically lazy. The last lines mirror the ending of the relationship between Shylock and Jessica said conventionally in rhyming couplets to add closure. This part of the play causes us to reconsider our feeling towards Shylock as he has lost his daughter. It is arguable that Shylock receives far less of a stark portrayal than was common in Shakespeares time and that given the constant degradation he endures, we can feel sorry for him.

Troy and the Iliad free essay sample

The movie Troy and the epic poem, the Iliad, reveal distinct differences and similarities in several scenes such as when Achilles learns of his fate but still decides to go to war; which is a similarity, and two other scenes which are differences that concern the length of the war and the other is the role of the gods in the story. In both the movie and the book Thetis, Achilles mother tells him of his fate which is that if he sails for Troy he will earn glory and fame but his life will be cut short. Thetis also says that if he decides to stay Achilles will live a long life, get married to a loving wife and have beautiful children. The choice that Achilles faces is either to stay and have a family meaning that his name will only be remembered for a few generations in his family or to go to Troy to fight and he or really his name will become immortal. We will write a custom essay sample on Troy and the Iliad or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In the Iliad Achilles says For my mother the goddess, silver-footed Thetis, tells me that twofold fates are bearing me toward the doom of death: if I abide here and play my part in the siege of Troy, then lost is my home-return, but my renown shall be imperishable; but if I return home to my dear native land, lost then is my glorious renown, yet shall my life-long endure, neither shall the doom of death come soon upon me. . (Iliad 9,4) Since Achilles decides to go to fight in both versions it shows that his thirst for glory is the same in the movie as it is in the epic poem. Two contrasting scenes which appear in the movie and the poem are when the Greeks manage to breach the Trojan walls in 17 days in the movie Troy compared to the ten years it took to achieve such a feat in the Iliad. Already have nine years of great Zeus gone by This might be because of time constraints associated with a movie and the need to stay under budget thus creating a war which only lasts 17 days. Another key difference is the role of the gods. In Greek culture the gods were an essential facet of life so it makes sense that they would be deeply involved or incorporated into the Iliad where the gods take sides and even fight alongside the soldiers. The movie Troy on the other hand does not involve the gods in the story in fact the gods are barely mentioned. This is probably due to the fact that Greek gods and goddesses are not important in modern day culture. The similarities and differences in the movie and the book may seem to subtract from the story but in truth they do not. The similarities and differences between the book and the movie add to the timelessness of the epic. The poem preserves the Greek culture aspect of the story and the movie adds a modern interpretation to the epic while staying true to the story.

Business Practices of Woolworths and Wesfarmers

The Australian retail industry is dominated by big game players. There is no chance of a small retail brand to ever grow and prosper in the retail market of Australia. The big brands dominate the entire market with their ‘House products', the products labeled under their brand and exclusively available in their stores only (Gas price regulation for a retail market administrator 2004). The Australian retail market constitutes liquor sales, tobacco, and grocery retail. The big players dominate 60 per cent of the Retail trade, 50 percent of the tobacco trade and 80 per cent of Liquor and vintage alcohol sales. The promotion of their in-house products can be devastating for generic brands. The supermarket brands downgrade and run campaigns against generic brands. The supermarket brands have a huge impact on the flow of liquid cash from the hands of the wealthy to the poor segments. The supermarket brands have also been associated with the tag of highest growing grocery prices in th e entire world. The first brand that we have selected for this study and discussion is Woolworths and Wesfarmers. The brand has been dominating the retail trade since its inception. The Coles supermarket brand is owned by Woolworths and Wesfarmers. The Coles has the largest number of grocery retail outlets in entire Australia (Sinapuelas and Robinson 2008). This brand is a common name that we come across each and every day, but we do not pause to think and ponder about the downfall of the economy that this company and its counterparts have brought to our nation. This segment of the industry is dominated by the cash rich and big names who have been major players since their inception. The companies like Coles offer high degrees of resistance to small details and their products by motivating the customers to buy only their products. The second company we have selected for our discussion regarding its ethical pursuance of business is Metcash (AÃ…Â ¾man and GomiÃ… ¡Ãƒâ€žÃ‚ ek 2012). Metcash is a company which operates in the distribution and whole selling of grocery and retail. Besides, Metcash operates in the Automotive and luxury car servicing segment. The company has invested time and effort in agreeing to the policy of good packing and has been playing a key role in up keeping the deals made at the Australian Packaging Covenant signatory. The company has made an excellent reputation in the way they package their product. The company has been an outstanding player in upgrading themselves and their way of packaging to a level of utmost importance. The importance they give for their packaging of the product plays a key role for the customer at the final moment of the choice of buying is made. The company has been involved in many overseas trade agreements with many third world nations (Supply chain technologies – at Woolworths 2003). The commitments have been made regarding direct cooperation to technical knowledge transfer and consultation. The involvements in Bangladesh and Vietnam for direct purchase of their country made cotton and other products. The Uzbek Cotton commitment is one such agreement, the company ahs signed for a direct role in involvement and cooperation. Apart from this; the company has earned the ranking of 67.4 % from the Greenweek rankings. The score is an overall reflection of the environmental commitments and implementation that the company has been engaged in. The Woolworths and Wesfarmers have the largest number of poker machines in Australia. The company earns huge revenue from the sale of chips and gambling (Prospectus for the 1 for 8 Entitlement Offer of approximately 89 million New Wesfarmers Ordinary Shares at an Offer Price of $29.00 per New Wesfarmers Ordinary Share to raise approximately $2.57 billion 2008). The company has been accused many times of robbing the money of its countries' citizens by luring them to earn some money. The customers have complained that they always fail to win money. The company has earned a lot from the sale of poker chips country full. It's time the company makes some effort to stop robbing the people of their hard earned money by stopping these poker centers, and allowing only visitors of other nations to engage in this gambling activity.   The Australian legislature can also make some notable changes to stop this trade of poker and gambling. The Nepal government has restrictions in place which bars its countrymen and women from the casinos spread all over the city. The locals are allowed only on the New Years Eve, Christmas and other special days (Prus 2004). The casinos in Nepal are major revenue generators but only at the expense of foreigners. The Australian legislature may take heed of the matter. The company has been criticized by industry experts and public forums for misleading the customers on many matters.   The act of negatively influencing the customers has a significant disadvantage for the company and its brand perception. The company often urges the customers in their supermarkets to buy their particular products. This act affects the companies offering generic products or own products a significant loss of revenue and client base. The company has also been fined regarding the above matter. The company we must say has not yet learned to form its mistakes, and continue to embark on its current trend of misleading the consumers. The Coles have been criticized and fined huge amounts by the competent authorities for misconduct and bad behavior towards its customers. The company has had a reputation of mistreating its employees and customers on the premises and various grounds. There have been police investigations on many matters. The company has also been charged with a fine for anticompetitive product and conduct. There might be individual rivalries among many business groups, but the company has been fined for negative conduct. The company earns huge revenue from the direct sale of tobacco and alcohol. The company owned and operated about two-thirds of the total alcohol sales (Paynter and Edwards 2009). The negative health impact the company creates by promoting its alcohol sales and tobacco usage is very harmful to the overall growth and health of the society. This brand has also been getting awards consistently on its good packaging practices. The quality of the packaging has been lauded to be pretty good. The company is also a principal signatory of the Australian Packaging Covenant (Ahmed 2009). That marks the company to strictly adhering to its good packaging practices. The company signed the deal promising to supply packaging which is healthy for the customer’s yet environmental friendly when disposed of as garbage.   The company promotes the use of GE-free products in its retail lineup. The company has been using the GE free products before any company in the entire industry. The company believes in the goodness of the GE free products in edible items. The company bagged the Packaging Award of 2015 for the healthiest and safest packaging in all of their products. The company policy of Genetically Modified crops or products is quite satisfactory (Clow and Baack 2004). The companies’ commitment to the cause of the environment is also well known. The company must embark on a strategy of sustainable progress and development. The company cannot succeed in the long term without implementing the policies of the sustainable business. The aspects of the business which make the industry comment on the negative aspects of Metcash’s business practices are related to gaming. The causes of significant revenue for the company apparently come from the gambling industry. The company relies heavily on its gambling trade for its generation of major revenue annually. The trade is a major hit among the countries citizens. But the trade heavily drains out money from the pockets of the poor and middle class. The company owned and operated major casinos all over Australia. The citizens must not only be discouraged from gambling, but these broad casinos must be closed urgently (Revenue 2005). The downfall of the economy can be attributed by some to gambling and massive spending. The company also accounts for almost major tobacco trade. The company has been tremendously criticized for its direct involvement in tobacco and alcohol promotion. The company portrays the image of alcoholism and gambling along with smoking tobacco as a positive aspect of this culture, except that in reality it's not. The company is involved in the grocery. The company sources its palm oil from unreliable and uncertified sources. The palm oil cultivations in Indonesia and Java, Sumatra are done by burning forest tracts and cultivating on them. The lungs of South Asia, which are the tropical rainforests of these countries suck out significant carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses (Jope 2012). The clearing of these forests for the cultivation of palm trees is harmful to the environment. Moreover, where palm trees are planted, the soil is rendered ineffective for any advancement in future times. The company must stop these unsustainable business practices at the earliest or must face destruction (Saharjo et al. 2006). The company cannot survive with all these negative criticism in the long run. The company must embark on the strategies of free trade and must promote competitive behavior among its contemporaries. It is high time, the company is made to realize this, and amend on its mistakes or it may suffer massive losses regarding the brand value and public perception. Ahmed, A. (2009). Significance of the thinking and writting on education (History of Research Paper

Significance of the thinking and writting on education (History of Education) - Research Paper Example As an educator, Webster’s vision was to maintain an American Christian republic where Christian values and moral principles were taught, valued and preserved. In short, Webster envisioned â€Å"an educational system that would impart, "a love of virtue, patriotism, and religion", based on scripture† (Pope 2010). Thomas Jefferson, on the other hand, regarded education as a key factor for the smooth function of democracy and he laid emphasis on education for all. He believed that only educated and well-informed citizens could play crucial roles in democracy; thus, for him education was the ‘foundation of democracy and a prerequisite to vote’. The four principles that governed Jefferson’s views on education were: â€Å"democracy cannot long exist without enlightenment†, â€Å"that it cannot function without wise and honest officials†, â€Å"that the talent and virtue, needed in a free society, should be educated regardless of wealth, birt h or other accidental condition† and â€Å"that the children of the poor must be thus educated at common expense† (Jewett 2010). Jefferson pointed out that States should be divided into small districts or wards for better educational outputs and for him the structure of education should be in four levels: elementary schools, grammar schools, universities, and life-long learning. However, Jefferson’s liberal views on education failed to accommodate the educational needs of women, Blacks or Native Americans. Pope, Randy. (2010). International accounting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

International accounting - Essay Example This allows the company to avoid currency conversion costs when acquiring specific raw materials and machineries from the international market. The company can also use the same to cater for foreign loan repayments instead of converting locally generated revenues. The company holds a large volume of inventories, which contains mainly finished products ready for the market. This exposes the company to adverse effects in the market whereby, a decrease in currency value consequently leads to a decline in the value of the stocks held. This includes the loss in value due to obsolescence and possible theft. In addition, the company could be forced to sell the products at a loss to create more space especially if the market is highly dynamic in their tastes and preferences. The company holds substantial amounts of trade and other receivables in its accounts. This exposes the company to the risk of suffering bad debts in cases where the debtors fail to honor their obligations. Although this represents future cash flows for the company, there is so much risk involved that it would advisable for a company to advance the same in the least possible value. The value also provides a pointer towards the possibility that buyers are making payments slowly, which reduces the amount of funds available to cater for expenses

Tough Love in Mel Gibsons Hamlet and Branaghs Hamlet Essay -- Essays

Tough Love in Mel Gibson's Hamlet and Branagh's Hamlet      Ã‚   One of the most emotional and moving scenes in William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet is in Act III, Scene I lines 90-155 in which the title character becomes somewhat abusive toward his once loved girlfriend Ophelia. It is interesting to examine the possible motives behind Hamlet's blatant harshness in this "Get the to a nunnery" scene toward the easily manipulated and mild mannered girl. While watching Kenneth Branagh and Mel Gibson's film adaptations of the play, the audience may recognize two possibilities of the many that may exist which may explain the Prince's contemptible behavior; Kenneth Branaugh seems to suggest that this display of animosity will help the troubled man convince his enemies that he is in fact demented, whereas the Mel Gibson work may infer that Hamlet's repressed anger toward his mother causes him to "vent" his frustrations upon Ophelia, the other female of importance in his life.    Though the reader realizes Hamlet's extreme anger and brooding throughout the entire play, he has no actual confrontation with another character until the aforementioned lines in Act III Scene I. One may notice the Prince's biting tone aimed at Claudius, Polonius or even Gertrude, but until his "Get the to a nunnery!" speech, no outbursts of pure rage in the presence of others can be found. This harshness in relation to Ophelia may be one of Hamlet's first moments of "action." The Prince seems reluctant to act upon any of his emotions toward anyone, though he often does give off an aura of discontentment and sorrow over his father's death. However, in these specific lines the audience sees Hamlet take an active stance in purging this young lady's once p... ...he primary cause of the violent reaction to Ophelia.    Living in an environment of deception and hostility, the reader can easily identify with Hamlet's anger. Most all compassionate audiences will be sympathetic to his plight. However, the origins of Hamlet's vehement actions toward his once beloved Ophelia can be debated from several different points of view. Whatever his reasoning may be, it is probably correct to assume that he regrets deeply every harsh world spoken toward Ophelia. He only realizes again what a beautiful and kind person she was- after her death.    Works Cited Hamlet. Dir. Franco Zeffirelli. Perf. Mel Gibson and Glenn Close. Videocassette. High School and Rizal Elementary School Essay

A week after celebrating the Day of Valor on the fourth month of the Roman calendar in the year of Rat, I was born one evening in a city called the financial capital of the country that was colonized by Spaniards for more than three hundred years after it was discovered by a famous Portuguese explorer. My first name Johanne is a variant of Johanna which means â€Å"God is gracious† and my second name Victoria means victory – hope my life goes well as my name. My parents, Victorino and Wilma, were a hard working couple who works as an employee of a private company. They produced of our own kind six times in eleven years having five boys, leaving me no sister to have a bonding with. Since I’m the only girl, they call me Princess or sometimes Negneg, short for negra, because of my dark complexion. It’s not that dark like people in Africa but it’s the darkest complexion in my family but it’s alright because I have these black tantalizing eyes, a good set of teeth and a slim body that makes me look like a Filipina beauty queen. I spent my seventeen years of existence in a city known for being a major cultural entertainment hub in Metro Manila. I studied my first five years of my primary education in Nicanor Garcia Elementary School, Makati. After my hit-and-run 50-50 accident case when I was in fifth grade, God gave me my second chance to live and finished my elementary course in Rizal Elementary School in Laguna. I have to transfer because of the severe fracture in my right leg causing me to have a hard time going up stairs. I have recovered from what had happened and continued my secondary education in General Pio del Pilar National High School in Makati. In elementary, I always make my parents proud of me by giving them a numerous medals every end of the school year. I’ve been a consistent contestant in Mathematics Quiz Bee and I made my school proud after qualifying twice in Mathematics Trainer’s Guild, a program to train gifted Filipino kids for international competitions. Aside from Math, I’ve also been in various contests regarding Science and Journalism. Considering me as a dynamic student, I was fairly awarded at the end of the year. When I stepped high school, it was the most exciting part of my life. Having crushes, love team ups, courtships, prom night were the things that could really make you giggle. But the most remarkable incident that shaped my character now was improving my leadership skills. When I was in third year, I ran as the president of SMILE (Students Movement for the Improvement of Leadership and Empowerment) Party List for the upcoming Supreme Student Government election. I taught I’m going to win because I’m from the star section but I’m wrong. I lost. I’m so ashamed. Because of that, I don’t feel like going to that school again. But there was a Non-government organization that invites the students to go on camp in Iba, Zambales for free. Of course, I joined and that made me forgot the pain I felt. On the first night of the camping, everything has changed after the moment I received Jesus Christ as my personal savior. When I got back in school, God blessed me so much that He gave the Hi-Y Club (a high school based club of Young Men’s Christians Association) in my lead. From that happening, I really appreciated the quote: â€Å"After the storm, there’s a rainbow. † I taught the door of opportunity to explore more in leading has closed for me, not realizing He has opened the window for me to experience the chance I thought I lost. Because of this club, I learned to balance my mind, body and spiritual aspect of my life. Creating programs, helping community, serving others and volunteering were some of my experiences that really made my heart swollen and would like to share to others to inspire them. Aside of being a Y’er, I’m now a Christian and started serving Him like sharing the good news, being a part of dance and drama ministry, and helping other Christian to grow in their spiritual life. I feel over joy and satisfaction every time I see myself volunteering on the camp where I was saved. After the enjoyment of high school, I took one step forward in the reality of life. I face the truth that my life will rotate in complicated solutions, brain-whacking terms, millions of numbers, struggling calculators, statements to finish, stability of study, life-long practice, thick books to read, rushing late night work, ugly eye-bugs, unbalanced sums, financial reports, constant lack of sleep, accurate solutions, and heart-stopping result after deciding to take Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in the first polytechnic university in our country. I know I can make it through because I believe that â€Å"what the mind can conceive, the body can achieve†. I may not be the cream of the crop in our class but I will manage to pursue my dreams step by step because I cling to God’s promise: â€Å"For I know the plans I have for you,† declares the Lord. â€Å"Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and future. †(Jeremiah 29:11).
